The controversial idea that sea slugs have evolved in order to survive extended periods of time off of sunlight utilizing the process of photosynthesis is still confusing many. It makes me wonder that if the simple sea slug can adapt and evolve to such a dramatic extent, what is in store for humans? If many species continue to rapidly adapt and alter, how different will the food chain or connections of species become.

The sea slug is found to be living with the genes of the alga it eats. Because of the genes from the alga, the sea slug is finding its nutrition from sunlight. According to Pierce, there is no possible way that the genes from the alga should work in an animal cell. If this is happening to such a small simple creature, can it happen for humans as well?

Its interesting to see that this animal can use photosynthesis, a mechanism thought to be only active in plants, to eat. When I read this I wondered if at all it even was an animal. Do the cells have cell walls? are there chloroplasts in its cytoplasm? If it isn't this is an impressive hybrid.

It is interesting to see that the sea slug has been able to adapt to the ability to use photosynthesis and survive off of the sun. It is a controversial concept because the gene that these slugs have that allow them to use photosynthesis to survive should not be present in an animal cell. Its amazing to see that although something that was once thought to not be possible can be possible in nature such as with this slug.

It is crazy to learn about how the sea slug has adapted to use photosynthesis and survive off the sun. That is hard to believe because plants use photosynthesis to survive and the sea slug is a animal which its unheard of for an animal to use the process for survival.

Its interesting to know that a slug can use photosynthesis. I thought this could only happen in plants, not animals. Knowing that the slug had to learn to adapt to its atmosphere is interesting because some animals cannot do that. Its cool to see what animals will do to continue to survive and grow.

It's really interesting knowing that the slug can survive using photosynthesis, like how a plant would produce food to survive. I find this very weird, the slug appears to look like a leaf, but how would this work. it's unheard of a living thing using photosynthesis other then plants.

The sea slugs manage to go throughout there life and adapt using photosynthesis. It is very interesting how they life off of just using photosynthesis. These genes help sustain photosynthetic processes inside the slug that provide it with all the food it needs.

I think it's amazing how the slug is using photosynthesis to survive. I would never think that the animals are able to use it. With the plants being able to use the sun, te animal must be very similar to it.

I think this article is very interesting because I never knew that a slug can use photosynthesis to survive. This adaptation is a new evolution of the slugs and they will continue to develop with new adaptations as years progress.

I think it's intetesting to think that something we think of as an animal is able to use the process of photosynthesis in order to keep itself alive for months at a time. It is weird to think about how this is actually happening because according to Pierce the genes from algae should not work in the cell of what we know or think is an animal. Or is it?

The slug is such a complex different looking creature that it doesn't suprise me that it doesn't perform ordinary actions. The green sea slug is an extraordinary living critter who is capable of absorbing sunlight to feed on. The sun not only feeds it but it keeps it alive for months at a time. It's interesting how some biotic factors can function so differently than people understand or are aware of.

I didn't know slugs could use photosynthesis to survive. The slug gets all the food they need from it. I thought only plants could survive off it but slugs as-well.

Who would ever think sea slugs could be so interesting. The fact that they obtain some of the genes from the algae they feed on, is incredible. Sea slugs have adapted wih the photosynthesis so well. This small creature has adapted better than many large creatures do.

This is the first time I've ever heard anything like this happen. For the sea slug to feed off of sunlight is amazing. No one ever knew that an animal could use photosynthesis to survive. This makes me wonder if it is possible for other animals to obtain this gene and adapt like the sea slug does.

The fact that an animal as simple as the sea slug could have adapted so dramatically is amazing to think about. You would not think of a slug making big evolutionary changes and adapting for as many years as they say it has been.

Sea slugs are nothing like the slugs we find on our porch. They look like a leaf and feed off of sunlight! It's amazing that it is able to feed off of sunlight, even though it is an animal. This Sea Slug is like an animal and a plant!

Sea slugs are amazing animals that have qualitis of both animals and plants. This is because of the algea ghat they eat. The fact that they can use photosynthesis gives them an advantage while surviving in the wild, because they can survive when there is little food around.

I think it's an amazing thing that the slugs are able to do. I just hope this furthers research and studies with gene transfering to help with human healing. If we're able to figure out how and what makes it possible for the genes to transfer in the slug maybe we can trigger the same process in us.

It is shocking to see that sea slugs can live off of sunlight. As far as we knew only plants can use photosynthesis until now. I wonder if the gene in the alga can be used in other animals as well. If there is no food for the sea slugs they are able to use sunlight until they find more food.

It's captivating to learn that the green sea slug manages to live for months at a time, by "feeding" on sunlight, like a plant. It's abnormal to me that a marine animal can act like a plant. Nonetheless, it is cool to hear that it's not just a theory. It was fascinating to learn that the emerald green sea slug's chromosomes have some genes that comes from the algae it eats. It intrests me that this is one of the only known examples of functional gene transfer from one multicellular species to another.
