The practice of cannibalism with certain kinds of animals is nothing new to the world. If octopus are getting more food for less energy by eating smaller octopus, I guess there really isn't a problem with it. Unless eventually the population goes down, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, or else I'm sure the author would have stressed the point. Even if it is a bad thing, there's really no way humans could prevent it.

It's not like they are just eating each other for no reason though, scientists think it's because of the captivity creating more initiative to eat one of the same species rather than other prey. This shows that octopus need either more sanctuaries with diverse marine life or decreased captivity to encourage larger food prey options.

After reading this article I didn't really think that octopuses would do that. It is kind of gross thinking that they eat each other. But when they say they eat each other for territorial purposes. That I can see cause mabye they are being protective. But each study shows that they eat the tips of their arms only.

I think that the octopus eat each other for territorial reasons. If they feel like they are endangered then they result in cannibalism because that is how they feel they protect themselves. There is nothing we can do as humans to prevent this from happening.

I think it is crazy to think that they are starting to eat their own species. Not only are the octopus just looking for something eat because they are starving but now because they know they will get more protein and energy from eating their own kind. Now the mussel population will increase from the octopus eating eachother rather than the mussel's, causing the octopus population to decrease.

Although scientists had been aware of cannibalism occurrences among members of Octopus vulgaris, the previously reported cases were known only from analyses of stomach contents and laboratory observations. However, now that they have a video recording of that it happening is interesting to know.

I think octopuses eating their own kind is wrong. Unfortunately since the octopuses receive more energy from eating it's own species, they will continue to do it for their benefit. Hopefully the octopus population doesn't decrease because of this problem, then it would be harmful for not just the small octopuses.

Maybe the octopuse count will increase due to more staying love as not starving to death, then producing other octopuse. If the big octopuse are healthy and full of energy the. That gives tem room to reproduce.

It is strange to think that the octopuses are eating their own kind, but then again maybe some are getting to be very territorial of their areas they are just trying to make a statement, also maybe it is just something they naturally do when they think there are too many of its kind.

It's been known that in the past octopuses have eaten their own kind because scientists have found proof in the stomach of these species. So it isn't really surprising that octopuses like to eat other members of their species. If it gives them more energy, I don't see the problem with it unless the octopus population decreases.

It's strange how the octopus only eats the tip but I could see it as a territorial warning. Yet research is saying that they might just be tired of opening all those muscles when they can just eat a smaller octopus which uses less energy and is more effective.

At first when I read this article I was very surprised that the octopuses would eat their own kind. But after reading more and thinking about it, it is not that big of a deal. They are doing whatever it takes to survive and if it consists of eating their own kind so let it be. And all the encounters they had says they only eat the tips of their tentacles.

It seems that when octopus go on on their hunt they don't look for just something else to eat but pray on their own kind. There have been different reports over time about this happening but for the first time they have it on a gruesome film of this action taking place. They like to eat the tips of each other tentacles and then try for the rest. It's been reported over three times and scientists don't know why they do this but they do it anyway. It's definitely a gruesome find and something to look into.

I was completely shocked by reading this article. Prior to reading this I didn't really know an octopus's diet, but cannibalism is still a surprise just because it's hard to get food. Even if it's the suction cups of the tentacles it's still a very cruel thing to do, and we should look into starting sanctuaries for them to help feed them the necessary diet they naturally need to survive and live a long healthy life.

I think that the octopus are acting out and eating others as a defense mechanism. They may feel that if they don't, the other octopus may take their habitat or food. Even though they are just eating the tip, it may cause the other octopus to lose senses/not be able to act normally. Also, if they octopus have recently started this behavior, it may be because their normal food source is no longer available. This may be a human impact from fishing, pollution, or other things.

I think that the octopus is acting out in a territorial way, I think that this is their way on staying safe and surviving. Instead of searching for food they could eat a little octopus which would take less effort then finding food. I believe this is a natural thing for them to survive like any other sea animal.

Just thinking of eating my own kinds is creepy but if for the octupus I don't think they realise what there doing. There just doing what they need to do in order to survive.

I don't think it is a bad thing that they are eating their own kind. If they gain energy from eating them then I don't see a problem. I also think it has something to do with territory.

I think that the octopi are searching for food within their territory and find smaller or weaker octopi. They eat the other octopus as a result of a fight and showing their dominance. octopi are also an opportunistic predator and will eat anything that it can overpower and eat.

The article I just read on octopus was very shocking to me. I didn't know that they eat off each other. Well if its a source of food then I guess its okay. If the population starts to decrease then we should step in and do something. But for now Its okay.

I think it's wrong for octopus to be eating their own kind and are acting out in territorial ways. I think they are just doing it for their own safety and survival.

I think that when the octopus is eating its own kind, its doing whatever it can to survive. The article states that capturing another octopus and eating it gives them more protein per gram than their normal diet, mussels. In the three cases recorded, scientist say that only the tips of the arms were being eaten, so its not like the entire body is being consumed by another octopus.

I think that octopus cannibalism is not necessarily a bad thing. The octopus eating its own kind allows it to receive more energy without having to exert a lot of energy eating it. The possible negative impact of this is that the octopus cannibalism could cause a population decrease of the species of octopus that these octopus are feeding on.

After reading this article, I would have never thought that octopuses would do such a thing. It's kind of unsettling when thought about, but I can see their reasons for being protective.
